The 817 is a great radio. I haven’t used it on FM yet though only HF.
@melbourneradio Hi Grant, it was videos from yourself and Peter VK3YE that really made me want one of these units. I really look forward to playing around on air to see how far I can get! Thanks for the comment & hope you are going well. Regards, Craig
@melbourneradio PS… the 817 seems to work quite well on FM as you saw in my video. That is just using the little portable antenna that mounts on the front of the radio. The receiver is very sensitive and works really well on VHF and UHF. I’m the opposite.. I only got the radio on Tuesday… so I’ve used it on 2m and 70cm but not on HF yet..but hopefully tomorrow I can go have a play with the radio on HF. If anyone is about I may take some video & upload it. Regards, Craig
I’ve worked a lot of DX on HF running 100MW on SSB, with my IC-703 & a R6 vertical. I can’t remember the lowest power on the 817. Have fun with QRP
Cheers & 73, Jack.
@QRPPPSK31 Hi Jack. The FT-917ND can put out 500mw, 1w, 2.5w and 5w. I knocked it down to 500mw and still had no trouble getting out even with a Buddipole. I certainly had fun with it today and look forward to going out with it again when I can. Many more videos to come! Regards, Craig VK3CRG
did yours come with the right angle adapter for the antenna?
@mags71 No unfortunately the 817 didn’t come with the right angle adapter. The antenna, as you probably know just pokes out into your face if you lay the radio down! If you use the radio with the carry strap it’s fine…but no good for laying it down. Luckily I had a right angle adapter kicking around in my junk box but you can get them on Ebay etc too.
Very Nice! I’d like to get myself an 817 to play with at the beach.
